Alhamdulillah, NASA and SpaceX Agree to Avoid Collisions in Space

Suara.com – NASA and SpaceX agreeing a deal to avoid colliding in space with each other.

According to a NASA update, the agreement covers conjunction and crash-launch avoidance as well as the latest ride-sharing missions.

This deal was made because of the large number of satellites Starlink belonging to SpaceX which is now in Earth orbit.

“With commercial companies launching more satellites, it is imperative that we improve communications, exchange data and establish best practices to ensure we all maintain a safe space environment,” said Steve Jurczyk, acting NASA Administrator.

Currently, there are more than 1000 Starlink satellites orbiting Earth.

SpaceX is expected to continue launching satellites until it forms a constellation of 40,000 satellites, although the plan has come under criticism from competitors and astronomers about safety and scientific issues.

NASA says that Starlink is equipped with GPS navigation to estimate orbital parameters, ion propulsion systems and autonomous maneuverability that will help avoid potential collision incidents.

Reporting from Independent, Sunday (21/3/2021), SpaceX also stated that its satellites will maneuver autonomously or manually to avoid NASA missions.

Concern over the two pieces of space debris colliding has increased as more unused equipment orbits Earth.

Last October, a catastrophic collision between Chinese rocket debris and a decommissioned Soviet satellite was avoided, with a 10 percent chance of a collision.

The result of such a collision could create a layer of debris around Earth that would hinder space travel.

However, even so there is a lack of action to clean up discarded or unused material in space.
