Description
The Alhambra Theatre in Granada is part of the network of theatres of the Andalusian Government and is managed by the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport. Located in the historic centre of the city, in the Realejo neighbourhood, it has a privileged location.
Its programming includes theatre, dance, concerts… It opened in 1992, replacing the cinema. Alhambra Cinemawhich, in its heyday in the mid-1970s, programmed so-called “art house” films. It was the determination and tenacity of a private company, Teatro del Sur, that saved this space from a dangerous decline in the late 1980s, undertaking the reforms that would turn the old cinema into a new theatre. In less than four years of programming, its commitment was consolidated with the 1996 Andalusia Theatre Award, awarded by the Andalusian Government, which the following year took over its reform and subsequent management.
Contemporaneity, in theatre, dance and music, has been and is the hallmark of this hall, which in 2005 underwent a major refurbishment. Since the end of 2007, with excellent occupancy rates, it has once again brought together the people of Granada who continually return to it, with a programme that is a benchmark of modernity, of the cross-cultures, of border art, and with a determined support for the professional companies of Granada and Andalusia.
Also worth highlighting is its programme for educational centres, which brings together thousands of participants.
