Algeria, patron of the Polisario, has no intention of giving up on the Sahara issue. On the contrary, the country remains strongly committed to it.
“Algeria will always defend Western Sahara,” the Algerian president declared on Monday in his speech before both houses of Parliament, gathered for the occasion. Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized that Algeria supports the struggle of the Sahrawi people as it is a decolonization issue included in the United Nations Decolonization Commission. With these new statements, a reconciliation between Rabat and Algiers seems further away than ever.

Regarding Palestine, the Algerian president reiterated Algeria’s “clear” and “not new” position. “As President Houari Boumédiène said, we are on the side of Palestine, whether it is unjust or oppressed (dhalima aou madhlouma),” he said, recalling that his country “since Salah Eddine Al Ayoubi (Saladin, the liberator of Al Qods during the Crusades, ndvr) is connected to Palestine… We have our martyrs there.”
