Algerian Amel Melih wins gold in 50m freestyle

Algeria won a gold medal in the 54th edition of the Geneva International Challenge, which took place from January 15 to 17, 2021, thanks to its swimmer Amel Melih, on 50 m freestyle. This competition qualifies for the Tokyo Olympic Games and the World Swimming Championships.

Algerian swimmer Amel Melih won the final of the 50m freestyle of the 54th edition of the Geneva International Challenge, qualifying event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the World Championships in the discipline.

With a time of (26’04 ”), the resident of the Saint Priest club in France, Amel Melih, took the first step of the podium, ahead of the Italian Federica Pelligrini (26’05 ”) and the Dutch Kim Bosh (26’49 ”). Despite this consecration Amel Melih, 27, missed the opportunity to perform the minimums for the Olympics-2020 (25’51 ”) and the Worlds (25’92 ”).

For his part, his compatriot Abdellah Ardjoun managed to obtain the silver medal in the 200m backstroke with a stopwatch (2’01”64), behind the Swiss Romain Mitokov, who achieved the minimums for the Olympics-2020 with a time (1’57”39).

With this performance, Abdellah Ardjoun validated his ticket for the World Short Course scheduled in the United Arab Emirates, in December 2021, as well as the World Wide Course scheduled in Japan in May 2022, by achieving the minimum B.

The two Algerian swimmers, Ardjoun Abdellah and Djabellah Anis, also won, on Friday, the bronze medal in the 50 meters backstroke and 1,500 meters front crawl in this 54th edition of the IGC, organized from January 15 to 17 in Geneva.
