Toulon international tournament, 2022 edition
The Algerian selection of U20 football will therefore take part in the 48th edition of the Toulon Hopes international tournament, which will take place from May 29 to June 12, 2022 in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in southern France, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) said on Saturday (September 25).
This tournament is open to players born in 2002, 2003 and 2004 in order to allow federations to prepare for the continental championships for the various FIFA competitions or the Olympic Games which will take place in 2024 in Paris.
This tournament will bring together 12 teams divided into 3 groups of 4. The first of each group and the best second are qualified for the semi-finals. The teams not qualified for the final square will play a classification match, which will give 4 to 5 matches per team.
Algeria’s last participation dates back to 1984
Started in 1967, the Toulon tournament has become an important meeting point for the Espoirs selections. The 2020 and 2021 editions did not take place, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while the last, that of 2019, was won by Brazil. Previously, England had aligned 3 successes (2016, 2017 and 2018).
Algeria took part in this tournament in the 1980s, with, in 1983, a selection made up of a majority of players from the ex-club of the DNC Alger, which ranked 3rd in its group behind the Brazil and Germany and ahead of China then finishing 6th in the tournament, and occupying the same rank in 1984.
