Algeria. Covid-19: cases explode again

#Algeria : Following the gradual deconfinement started since June 14, the number of daily cases has practically increased by three, indicating a new wave of contamination.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Algerian president, puts everything on the back of his compatriots and speaks of “irresponsible behavior” on their part.

Algeria is once again facing an explosion in the cases of Covid-19. Yesterday, Sunday June 28, 2020, no less than 305 new cases of contamination were registered, bringing the total number of people tested positive for the new coronavirus to 13,273.

In the space of a week, Algeria recorded more than 1,500 new confirmed cases, representing a weekly increase of 12.76%, which shows an acceleration of the rate of progression of the disease. This increasingly worrying development is explained by the gradual deconfinement that has applied since June 14.

In fact, since that date, the number of new daily cases has been constantly increasing, to the point that the evolution curve has again become hyperbolic. Thus, from 112 cases detected on June 15, we rose to 149 a week later, and to 305 new cases, barely 6 days later. This rhythm is absolutely nothing reassuring.

It is all the more worrying that the country has so far failed to curb mortality. Since last April, between 5 and 9 people have died every day.

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of victims officially counted has been 897, which makes Algeria the third most affected country on the continent, behind Egypt with its 2,789 deaths and South Africa which account 2,456.

The Algerian case poses all the more questions since the country has chosen to diagnose as little as possible. It is only very recently that the government has chosen to carry out 2,500 tests per day. A decision which is reflected in the official figures for contamination, showing that during the first three months, the number of cases was largely underestimated.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune bangs his fist on the table by blaming Algerian citizens to better clear the State of this state of affairs. Yesterday, he asked his government to tighten sanctions against violators of health rules aimed at limiting the spread of the epidemic. According to the head of state, some “want to make believe that the epidemic is only a myth created for political ends”.

Obviously, the allusion is clear. It targets the Hirak protests that took place every Friday, between February 2019 and March 2020. The fact is that since the first cases of infection with the new coronavirus, stopping the protest in the streets is very beneficial for the government.
