Algeria closes businesses because of indiscipline

Many shops, reopened last week, had to close again this weekend in several regions of Algeria, including Algiers, due to non-compliance with hygiene rules and social distancing, according to local authorities.

Confronted since the beginning of Ramadan with the non-application of preventive measures by traders and residents, about fifteen prefects (out of 48) have ordered the closure of recalcitrant businesses, in particular clothing and shoe stores, boutiques traditional pastries and cakes, very popular during the holy month, as well as perfumeries and hairdressing salons.

The images of lines stretching in front of certain signs angered the authorities and health professionals.

More than 460 deaths have been recorded in Algeria since the registration of the first case on February 25, according to the Scientific Committee for monitoring the evolution of the pandemic. A total of 4,474 cases have been officially reported.

But since the beginning of the month of fasting on April 24, 56 deaths and 1,467 new cases have been registered, a clear increase.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had threatened Friday to tighten the confinement if a relaxation was found.
