There is no challenge that Alfonso Cabello can resist when he puts on the number to compete. In just over a minute her firm and sculpted legs bring out their full potential by obeying her head and heart, always untamed. One kilometer, four laps of the velodrome and another feat that writes about the bicycle. The Andalusian cyclist has once again shown that he has no limits after winning the bronze medal in the time trial and the gold in team speed in the Spanish absolute track cycling championship held in Tafalla (Navarra).

For the third year in a row he faced the great challenge of fighting a duel with the best Spanish ‘pistards’ and the athlete from La Rambla (Córdoba), who was born without a left forearm, has not missed his appointment with the podium. It is the third medal that he reaps in his fetish test after the silver and bronze that he achieved in the 2018 and 2019 editions, respectively, in Valencia. A metal that allows him to show society that the barriers are mental and that further enlarges his legend under the ring.

At the Miguel Induráin velodrome, the Cordovan did not hesitate, he went out at a frantic pace from the first moment, scorched the pedals and stopped the clock at 1: 04: 246, remaining a few hundredths of the champion of the last two years, Pepe Moreno ( 1: 04: 027), who lost his national crown at the hands of the young Ekain Jiménez, with a time of 1: 03: 995. On the podium she wore a huge smile with the bronze booty around her neck, the best gift to celebrate her 27th birthday.

“The balance is very positive both in terms of results and performance. It is what we expected, in the kilometer the first four classified have been in a margin of half a second, with which I could have finished second or fourth, so I am very happy. I had a good time on a very hard velodrome, repeating last year’s record in Valencia, which is a faster track, so I’m better. And in team speed we were the favorites and we were called to victory if there was no setback, we have shown that we are a competent trident ”, he explained.

He had not stepped on the track for seven months, the last time he did it at the Milton World Championship (Canada), where he wore his sixth rainbow jersey in the kilometer test in category C5. He had barely prepared for the Spanish Championship, which he faced more relaxed, without pressure and as a test. It was prepared on the roads and industrial estates of Pozoblanco (Córdoba) and has only needed several training sessions in Tafalla to get the machinery ready and offer great performance.

To garnish his formidable performance in this event, he won the gold medal in team speed with Juan Peralta and Sergio Aliaga with the Gurpea Track Team, who beat the Catalan team with a time of 47.060 seconds. With work, humility and determination, Cabello is the history of Spanish cycling. And he still has a career ahead of him to put on a record that includes a gold medal at the Paralympic Games in London 2012, an individual bronze and a team bronze in Rio de Janeiro 2016, as well as six world champion titles (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020) and the world record (1: 01.683).

“What I always look for is that my athletic performance is valued and there are no unfounded prejudices that because it is different, I have to be less capable to do things. Every day with what I do I show that my capacity is sufficient and as high as that of any athlete. I am happy and calm because this confirms that all the work is on the right track. Seeing me up on the podium and with competitive times is an extra motivation to face the great goal, the Tokyo Games ”, he added.

Eduardo Santas is another of the cyclists of the Spanish Paralympic team that competes in the absolute championship. The Navarrese is fulfilling with note in his third participation: meritorious seventh place in the kilometer against the clock with 1: 11.278, eleventh in the pursuit with 4: 52.733 and among the 20 finalists in the scratch. For his part, Sanroqueño Óscar Higuera was ninth in the kilometer (1: 13.296) and 17th in the elimination and individual pursuit tests (5: 08.956).
