It’s a big surprise, but if you avoid the two-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a downright safe bet among mid-size SUVs. Under the right constellation of circumstances, he can cover a lot of kilometers with it.
Since the end of the production of the famous angular model 75 in 1991, Alfa Romeo has always had to make do with the modified technology of ordinary cars – for most of the time Fiats (155, 156), for a while also Opels, respectively the GM concern (159).
Finally again longitudinally
It manifested itself in compromises not only technical, such as the overloaded bow of stronger front wheels or bad raid, but also qualitative. For example, the beautiful 156 model, which in 1997 brought a strong wave of interest to the Milanese brand in our country, was literally falling apart due to corrosion after ten years, not to mention the seized TwinSpark gasoline four-cylinders.
The famous brand received a unique and truly worthy technical essence in 2016, when the Giulia model was presented on the new Giorgio platform. The engine is located longitudinally, so the new 690T series six-cylinder turbocharged with a pair of turbochargers with an output of up to 382 kW also fit.
The axles are aluminum, as is the under-engine frame. Thin-walled aluminum castings are also the key load-bearing parts of the body, especially the so-called damper pots. A shock absorber resting on a rigid part can prevent the bouncing of the wheels and unwanted movements of the body with higher forces, without, however, this manifesting itself in bangs, banging and reduced comfort.
The unique combination of comfort and precise control during dynamic driving is thus a sign not only of a mythical “great” tuning, but above all of a rigid body. The rear wheels are still driven, in the case of the Q4 variants, the front wheels can be connected via a clutch. We brought a separate Giulia model bazaar in World of Motors 43/2019.
