The former Prime Minister was elected President of the Council of Europe Committee for the Western Balkans. Alexis Tsipras.

The former prime minister is in Paris to participate in the Political Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

In particular, Alexis Tsipras was elected with an overwhelming majority of about 80% of the voters against the Hungarian, Zolt Nemeth, who belongs to the European conservatives and is close to the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban.

The candidacy of Alexis Tsipras was supported by the Socialists, the Left, the Liberals ALDE (Macron), as well as part of the European People’s Party (EPP).

The Commission for the Western Balkans

The Committee for the Western Balkans of the CoE was formed in order to highlight the great importance that the Council of Europe attaches to the fragile region of the Western Balkans, which has been characterized as Europe’s powder keg.

Its purpose is to monitor and encourage the governments of the countries of the Western Balkans in order to advance on the path of strengthening the rule of law, peace and mutual respect.
