Alexis Lafrenière: a prince in New York

The worst kept secret of the National Hockey League (NHL) was made official on Tuesday: the New York Rangers made Quebecer Alexis Lafrenière the very first choice of the draft held virtually on Tuesday.

Widely identified as the favorite for this first selection, Lafrenière was named MVP of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) at the end of the 2019-2020 campaign, an honor he won for a second consecutive year. He is the first Quebecer since Marc-André Fleury in 2003 to be the first player drafted.

Shortly after his selection, the Quebecer confessed to Louis Jean that the Rangers had not confirmed anything to him before the draft.

“I did not know. It is a big relief. I’m really happy to have finally been drafted and to be back with the Rangers. ” See the full interview on the video above.

For the occasion, the mythical Empire State Building was illuminated last night in the colors of the Rangers, namely blue, white and red. On the Twitter account of the famous 5th Avenue building, Lafrenière’s choice was highlighted by even writing his last name with the grave accent on the “e”.

The Rangers also had a nice touch for the Rimouski Oceanic prodigy with the headline in French on the front page of their website: “Bienvenue à Broadway”.

“It was an unreal feeling,” Lafrenière said during a video conference. The Rangers are a large organization. It’s an honor. When I heard my name, I thought it was special. We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. ”

Acting as captain of the Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Lafrenière collected no less than 112 points in 52 games during the last season. He totaled 114 goals and 297 points in 173 games in the QMJHL.

Lafrenière had decided not to join the Océanic this fall, preferring to focus on his preparation for the NHL campaign.

Byfield devant Stuetzle

Second, the Los Angeles Kings set their sights on forward Quinton Byfield, while the Senators chose German forward Tim Stuetzle moments later.

In addition to being an excellent scorer – 32 goals and 82 points in 45 games with the Sudbury Wolves – Byfield has the size of the job, at 6’4 ” and 215 lbs. For his part, Stuetzle impressed last season with seven goals and 34 points in 41 games in the German main league with the Mannheim Eagles despite having played more than half of the season aged 17.

The Detroit Red Wings have signed Swedish forward Lucas Raymond in the fourth row. Little used last year due to his young age with Frolunda in the Swedish Premier League, he has one goal and two points in four games this fall.

With their second selection of the day, the Senators for their part added US defenseman Jake Sanderson. Geoff Sanderson’s son seems to have inherited his father’s speed and explosiveness. He scored two goals and totaled 14 points in 19 games with the US Under-18 Development Program.

In short :

Under two separate deals with the Rangers and the Washington Capitals, the Calgary Flames dropped from 19th to 24th. Incidentally, they added the 72nd and 80th caps to their bank of choice. No other exchange was made.

Hendrix Lapierre (22nd, Washington Capitals), Jacob Perreault (27th, Anaheim Ducks) and Mavrik Bourque (30th, Dallas Stars) are the other Quebecers to have been drafted in the first round. Dawson Mercer (18th by the Devils), from Newfoundland, as well as Justin Barron (25th, Colorado Avalanche) also play in the QMJHL.

Rounds 2-7 will take place on Wednesday.

In addition, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman took the opportunity to announce that his circuit was targeting January 1, 2021 to begin his 2020-2021 campaign.
