Kremlin critic and blogger Alexei Navalny has been imprisoned in a penal camp near Moscow for months. He is rarely allowed to receive visitors there, so the congratulations on his 45th birthday come via social media. Family members like his wife Julia and supporters posted congratulations and photos on Instagram, Twitter and Co.

“Happy birthday,” wrote his wife Julia on Instagram on Friday, including a little heart emoji and a photo of the couple together. Nawalny’s press spokeswoman Kira Jarmysch also congratulated “the world’s best boss and future president” on Twitter. In response, there was a photo of him on Nawalny’s own account, showing him with his wife and their two children. In the post, the Kremlin critic thanks all his supporters.
Violation of reporting requirements
Navalny cannot celebrate this birthday with his family, he is sitting in a prison camp near Moscow. After an assassination attempt with the neurotoxin Novitschok last year, the opposition politician was treated in Germany. On his return on January 17, he was arrested at a Moscow airport. Navalny was sentenced to several years imprisonment for an alleged violation of reporting requirements from earlier criminal proceedings. He is now sitting in a penal camp in the Vladimir region around 100 kilometers east of Moscow. There had been headlines from time to time because Navalny had been on a hunger strike for weeks to protest against the conditions in the camp.
Meanwhile, according to the Interfax agency, bailiffs searched Nawalny’s homes for money and valuables. The searches were connected with 29 million rubles (327,000 euros) in damages, which the opposition member has to pay according to a court order. (dpa/khe)
