The mother of Alexei Navalny, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main opponent who died in an Arctic prison last week, said Thursday that officials are pressuring her to hold a “secret” burial for her son.
“They are blackmailing me, they are putting conditions on where, when and how Alexei should be buried. This is illegal,” Lyudmila Navalnaya stated in a message released by her team. “They want it done in secret,” she added.
She also indicated that investigators had taken her to see her body after days of being barred from the morgue.
“Yesterday afternoon they secretly took me to the morgue, where they showed me Alexei,” he said from Salekhard, the city closest to the Arctic prison where the politician died.
Navalny’s mother filed a lawsuit this Wednesday in court for the authorities to speed up the delivery of the body, something that she already demanded from the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, the day before. This was announced on the social network X by one of Navalny’s close collaborators, Iván Zhdanov.
The Salekhard Court, near the town where Navalny’s prison was located, registered the lawsuit and plans to study it on March 4 in a “closed hearing” to the public.
The appeal against the “inaction of the Russian Investigative Committee” in the matter of the delivery of the opponent’s body to his family was filed after the letter sent by the mother to Putin.
“I am addressing you, Vladimir Putin. The solution to this matter depends only on you. “Let me see my son once and for all!” Navalnaya, the opponent’s mother, had said in a video posted on YouTube and X on Tuesday.
The Russian politician, known as the Kremlin’s number one enemy, died suddenly on the 16th in the “Polar Wolf” Arctic prison.
Navalny’s widow and her team directly blame the Russian president for ordering the assassination of his main political opponent. The Kremlin called the accusations against the Russian head of state “baseless” and “rude.”
