Russian democracy activist Alexei Navalny, who died mysteriously in prison, was buried at Borisovskoye Cemetery on the 1st (local time). The main theme song from ‘Terminator 2’ was played when Navalny’s coffin was laid down.
According to USA Today, Navalny’s spokesperson shared a 26-second video of Navalny being lowered on Twitter that day. Navalny’s side said, “Navalny thought ‘Terminator 2’ was the best movie on earth. “The music from the last scene was played at his funeral,” he wrote.
Frank Sinatra’s song ‘My Way’ was also played as Ha Kwan-sik’s background music. Telegram and other social media reported that before Navalny was buried, his father and mother bent down and kissed their son’s forehead. Mourners expressed their condolences when they saw Navalny at the cemetery, and citizens who could not enter the cemetery commemorated him by creating their own monument with a photo of Navalny.
Mourners chanted slogans such as “Russia will be free” and “Russia without Putin” near the cemetery. More than 250,000 people watched the on-site broadcast video online, including on YouTube. Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said on her YouTube channel, “We are very grateful to those who came to the church and cemetery today,” and added, “Navalny’s supporters will be important now and in the future, so don’t stop.”
Although there was a warm tribute to Navalny, who was called President Putin’s biggest political enemy, the Kremlin did not respond to a request to evaluate Navalny. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned of the possibility of protests taking place following Navalny’s funeral, warning that “all unauthorized gatherings are illegal.”
