Alexei Navalny has been transferred to an unknown location, according to his team. The Russian opposition leader has been serving a sentence in a penal colony for years, but no longer appears to be there.
The Kremlin critic would no longer be registered in a penal colony east of Moscow. He has not been heard from for six days, Navalny’s team reports.
His employees raised the alarm last week after he was not present via video connection during a trial, while this is normally the case. Also, no letters from and to the opposition leader had been delivered for a week. The team is concerned, partly because Navalny recently had health problems.
The opposition leader regularly made himself heard on social media from the heavily guarded penal colony through his team. But it has been quiet there for a while.
His associates made preparations for a possible transfer to a stricter penal colony. The action came after Navalny was sentenced in August to a further 19 years in prison for extremism. This sentence is in addition to the eleven years he was previously sentenced to. He states that he was prosecuted and convicted for political reasons.
