What does the announcement say?
The Kremlin’s No. 1 rival Alexei Navalny died today in the Arctic Circle prison where he was serving a 19-year sentence, Russian prison authorities announced.
“On February 16, 2024, in the prison center No. 3, the prisoner Navalny A. A. felt unwell after a walk (…) the causes of his death are under investigation,” the announcement of the Russian prison services states.
“All the necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but they did not yield positive results. Emergency doctors confirmed the convict’s death. The cause of death is under investigation,” the statement added.
First reaction from the Kremlin
The representative of the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov said that Russia’s prison service is doing all checks on the death of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny, but that it has no information on the matter.
According to the TASS agency, Vladimir Putin has already been informed of Navalny’s death.
Zakharova’s response to the West’s accusations
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said today that what she called Western accusations of the death of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny were “revelatory of the West itself.”
In her statement, which she made public through the Telegram platform, Zakharova says that the forensic results for Navalny’s death are not yet available, but the West has already reached its own conclusions.
Zakharova did not specify which charges she is referring to.
