Alexei Navalny Death: France and Norway Summon Russian Ambassadors

Opposition named Alexei Navalny died in Russian custody. France and Norway also summoned the Russian Ambassador to these two countries.

Reported by the AFP news agency, Tuesday (20/2/2024), Paris has summoned the Russian ambassador to France following the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in an Arctic prison, said French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne on Monday (19/2) during a visit to Argentina .

“I have requested a meeting of the Russian ambassador today,” he said at a news conference with his Argentine counterpart in Buenos Aires, adding that “Vladimir Putin’s regime has once again shown its true colors.”

Meanwhile, the Norwegian Foreign Ministry on Monday (19/2) said it had summoned the Russian ambassador over the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today summoned the Russian ambassador to discuss the death of Alexei Navalny. In the conversation, Norway’s views will be expressed on the responsibility of the Russian authorities for the death and to facilitate a transparent investigation,” the ministry said. in a statement, adding that the meeting had not yet taken place but would happen soon.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin had not commented on the death of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, known as his most vocal critic. Navalny’s death in prison last week sparked grief and condemnation.

The news of Navalny’s death emerged a month before elections will be held that will extend Putin’s rule for the next six years.

Russian authorities have also reportedly not given Naval’s mother and wife access to his body. That sparked anger among Navalny’s supporters who accused Moscow of “murderers” trying to “cover their tracks”.

Putin is still silent and has not commented on Navalny’s death, which was announced by Russian authorities on Friday (16/2) last week.

The Kremlin has also not released a new statement since Friday (16/2) evening when it criticized Western leaders who were busy demanding that Putin take responsibility for Navalny’s death.
