Opposition politician Russia who is now in prison, Alexei Navalnyassessing the military defeat of Moscow in Ukraine ‘inevitable’, even if the Kremlin sends more troops to its neighbor which it invaded since February last year.
As reported AFPTuesday (21/2/2023), 46-year-old Navalny is serving a nine-year prison term on an embezzlement charge, which his supporters say is his punishment for challenging the Kremlin.
In a statement released ahead of the year anniversary Russian invasion of UkraineNavalny said Kiev should be allowed to determine its own destiny and that Moscow should respect the 1991 borders.
“The lives of tens of thousands of Russian soldiers have been senselessly destroyed,” Navalny said in what he called a “political platform”.
“Eventual military defeat could have been postponed at the cost of the lives of hundreds of thousands of additional reservists, but overall it was unavoidable,” he said.
Navalny stressed that “tens of thousands of innocent Ukrainians” had been killed because of the President Vladimir Putin wanted to retain power ‘at any cost’.
Navalny also mentioned in his statement that Russia should respect Ukraine’s 1991 borders, which include Crimea.
“There is nothing to discuss here,” said Navalny, adding that borders cannot be changed due to war in the 21st century.
