Alexandroupolis / “Planting” in a Natura area and a liquefied gas installation

Appeal by WWF and Greenpeace for the cancellation of the license of FSRU Alexandroupolis

In addition to the wind turbines in the Kamenas of Evros and in the Natura areait is revealed that “plant” in a protected area and liquefied gas regasification facility (FSRU).

The facility is designed out of Alexandroupoli and within the Natura area “Maritime area of ​​Thrace”.

Environmental organizations WWF and Greenpeace they did recourse and they ask for her annulment of the recent decision amending and renewing the environmental conditions for FSRU Alexandroupolis, reporting to the competent authorities the following, among others, violations:

1. Infringement institutionally protected zoning ban high risk facilities for an accident (Seveso) within areas of the Natura 2000 network.

2. Illegal extension of hazardous installation permitignoring the fact that the original data has changed significantly.

3. Ignoring the obligation to inform the public and consultas provided by the European environmental and energy legislation.

4. Illegal visaas non-essential, of the increase in greenhouse gas emissions that the project will cause.

WWF Greece and the Greek office of Greenpeace request the competent Ministers of Environment and Energy and the General Director of Environmental Policy of the Ministry of the Interior to cancel the decision to amend the environmental conditions and the license to install the FSRU Alexandroupolis.

At the same time, they point out that Greece offers land and water to energy giants for the construction of new mineral gas infrastructures, the Prime Minister calls on the international community to take an initiative to deal with climate change. For the past month, Greece has been mourning the devastating effects of climate change that manifested themselves dramatically over the summer. Plunging Greece deeper into dependence on fossil gas is a recipe for disaster.
