The society of Alexandroupolis is shocked by the death of the 15-year-old boy who had climbed with his father on the roof and was killed by falling into the skylight.
The words of the grandfather of 15-year-old Giannis, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, are moving. “We’re all devastated right now. Our souls are at the bottom. Of course I’m a priest and it’s bad to speak like that, but unfortunately at times like this the theological side goes aside and the human side comes out on top”, he said speaking to the central news bulletin of the Star and Alexandros Gygos.
«Last night was his birthday. We talked, I wished him well, I told him to live, my John, happy birthday and I told him in English and in Greek. He was laughing, “my grandfather I will come to hug you, to kiss you for the kind words you say to me”, added the priest moved.
How the fatal fall happened
The 15-year-old along with his father went up to the roof to carry some boxes. The damage happened within seconds when Giannis stepped on the glass covering the light fixture for a selfie, as his grandfather told the Star.
“The father was a little further away, until he saw where John was, he had fallen. He went back probably to take a selfie and the fateful thing happened“, he stated.
“They went to the roof to do something and he leaned on safety glass that covered the light fixture, but it couldn’t support the weight of the child. There was a loud noise, like glass breaking and something heavy falling. The father was in a state of amok,” described a tenant of the apartment building.
The scenes that followed were reminiscent of an ancient tragedy. As soon as the father realized what had happened he started screaming and calling for help. He was in a state of shock, as the tenant described.
