Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez This Tuesday gave a powerful feminist speech in the United States Congress. The Democratic congresswoman from New York has said that on Monday the Republican legislator from Florida Ted Yoho rebuked her in the halls of the Capitol, after a heated debate at headquarters about the increase in crime and unemployment in New York. According to Ocasio-Cortez’s account, Yoho stopped in front of her, pointed her finger at her and called her “unpleasant, crazy and dangerous.” Then, after walking a few steps to get away and in front of several journalists, he released a serious macho insult.
Ocasio-Cortez has made an argument about the normalization of macho culture in American society and among the Washington political class. “We’ve all had to deal with this, somehow, somehow, and at some point in our lives,” he said. The congresswoman recalled that other members of the Republican Party have made unpleasant comments about her and that even President Donald Trump has encouraged other politicians to verbally attack her. “This is not new and that is the problem. After the incident, Congressman Yoho has justified his behavior with the intensity of the debate that preceded him and arguing that “he has a wife and two daughters.” Ocasio-Cortez has explained that the fact that the congressman used the women of his family as a shield to avoid taking responsibility for their behavior, has encouraged her to publicly denounce the incident. “I don’t need Rep Yoho to apologize to me. Clearly he doesn’t want to. Clearly, when given the opportunity, he doesn’t and I won’t stay up until late at night waiting for an apology from a man who has no regrets for calling women and using abusive language towards women, ”she said.
The legislator, of Puerto Rican origin, has explained that the normalization of insults against women is part of a pattern and widespread behavior in various sectors, in which men with power authorize the rest to use abusive language. “It was not just an incident directed at me, when she does that to any woman, what Mr. Yoho does is to give other men permission to do the same to their daughters, her wife, and the women in her community.
