CORNWALL, ON – Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) will present its physician recruitment proposal to South Glengarry Council tonight, Tuesday, February 22.
In 2016, the population served by Alexandria physicians was estimated at 23,000 people, with an established practice size of 1,000 patients per physician.
Alexandria hasn’t recruited a doctor since 2018. In his presentation, Frank Wetering of HGMH says the reasons the hospital has struggled to recruit is a combination of student loan debt held by new doctors. , which averages $120,000 or more, and lucrative opportunities at wealthier hospitals in larger communities.
Recently, Glengarry Memorial Hospital lost five physicians due to relocations and retirements.
As of February 22, 2022, HGMH will have a 22-bed inpatient unit and will require a physician to serve these patients seven days a week.
HGMH has office space ready to accommodate five recruited physicians. If he fails to recruit, about 3,150 patients will be left without doctors.
