Alexander Zverev’s Museum of Modern Art Visit Before US Open: A Tennis Champion’s Skepticism and Entertainment

Alexander Zverev particularly liked the visit to the Museum of Modern Art during the tourist program with his friend Sophia Thomalla in New York before the US Open. However, some exhibits left the Olympic tennis champion skeptical.

“Some things were really very interesting and I was very interested in them. And then there were some things like a line on the television. Everyone said: That’s beautiful. Great,” said the 26-year-old with a laugh over the weekend. “Or there is a square of straw that you see in every field in Germany. Well, in New York it’s just art because you don’t see any straw in the city there.”

“At some point mentally switched off”

It was his 33-year-old girlfriend’s idea to go to the modern art museum in Manhattan. Even if the visit was interesting, after four hours he “turned off mentally at some point,” reported Zverev and joked: “That’s when I started eating straw.”

For the first time in his life, the twelfth in the world rankings was up on the Empire State Building on the day off before the start of the tournament – which impressed him moderately. “I’ve been to a skyscraper a few times,” said Zverev. «I also live on the 50th floor. Whether it’s the 50th or the 80th is no longer a huge difference.”

The US Open starts on Monday. Zverev starts on Tuesday (local time) in the first round against Australian Aleksandar Vukic in the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
