Alexander Zverev continues to play very successfully in China. Against Nicolas Jarry he has to go through three sets again. Now an old friend is waiting.

Beijing – Alexander Zverev reached the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Beijing after another show of strength. The Olympic tennis champion won his quarter-final against the Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6:1, 6:7 (5:7), 6:3 and appeared to have recovered well from the health problems of the past few days.

In the first two rounds, Zverev also had to go through three sets and was clearly physically weak. The 26-year-old looked fit against Jarry and scored his first match point after 2:17 hours.

“It was a game at a very high level. He played very well and is always very aggressive. That makes it difficult to exert pressure,” said Zverev after the game. “I’m a bit under the weather, it’s very demanding on the body overall. But I’m here to be successful.” Zverev really wants to qualify for the ATP Finals of the eight best players of the year in Turin (November 12th to 19th) and is continuing to collect important points for this in Beijing.

Zverev’s next opponent: Daniil Medvedev

For Zverev it was the seventh win in a row. Last week, the German number one won the title at the tournament in Chengdu. In Beijing, the 26-year-old will face Russian Daniil Medvedev in the fight for a place in the final.

Unlike in the previous two games, Zverev got off to a perfect start this time. The Hamburg native quickly took Jarry’s serve twice and took the first set after just 23 minutes. Zverev only made one avoidable mistake and dominated the action at will. There was no longer any sign of the health problems that had bothered him in the past few days.

In the second round, however, Jarry improved and equalized the set in the tiebreak. The game now threatened to tip over, but Zverev held on. When the score was 1:1, he fended off a break point and shortly afterwards took the serve from the Chilean himself. With an ace, Zverev made progress perfect. dpa
