A world ranking is the “ranking of the best athletes in a particular discipline”. This is how the Duden wants it and this is also how it is interpreted in tennis.
“At the moment the system is a catastrophe,” Alexander Zverev made no secret of what he thinks of the current world rankings in an interview with the Mexican TV broadcaster “Central Fox”: nothing. He currently “really doesn’t care” what is going on.

Dirk Hordorff, Vice President of the German Tennis Association (DTB), even considers the system to be “perverse” and attacked Roger Federer in the process. “He’s putting together his own ranking,” Hordorff rumbled in the podcast “Quiet, please” last December, implying that the Swiss citizen as a member of the ATP Player Council had too much power.
Zverev and Hordorff wonder about Federer
Federer is back: This is how the maestro’s comeback went
Federer, however, teased Hordorff, would no longer be in the top 50 without the “change in the ranking”. The record Grand Slam champion, who recently made his comeback in Doha, is currently in sixth place – one place ahead of Zverev.
But: How is that possible, how is it calculated and what does that mean for the Miami Masters currently taking place?
The ATP world rankings: a book with seven seals
On the basis of this, work will continue – as of now – until August 9th of this year. However, with further adjustments.
Tournaments that were played between March 4 and August 5, 2019 and were canceled or postponed in the 2020 season will be included in the rating for another year – but only to 50 percent. Which brings us back to Federer.
The superstar won the 2019 ATP Masters in Miami and was rewarded with 1000 points for this. The event was canceled last year, Federer will not be at the start in 2021. Means: The 39-year-old retains 500 out of 1000 points.
The maximum number of competitions included in the calculation of the number of points is currently 20. In the best case, these are four Grand Slam events, eight Masters tournaments, the seven best other competitions and the ATP finals at the end of the year.
Zverev speaks of a “disaster”
Against this background, it is understandable when the resentment grows among some professionals. After all, the ranking is much more than just a number game and, among other things, the basis for determining the seed lists at the major tournaments. Not to mention the fans, who are less and less able to follow what is going on in the world rankings.
Impressive catch-up: This is how Zverev Tsitsipas defeated
So it’s understandable that Zverev speaks of a “catastrophe”.
DTB Vice Dirk Hordorff, who wrote on Facebook: “Some of you have the problem of understanding the ATP ranking system. It is so simple, took the most sarcastic look at the undoubtedly existing weaknesses in the world rankings. Roger Federer can choose his place in the ranking – even when he’s not playing. “
Oh well.
