Alexander Tedja, Rich from Bangun Mal

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Forbes released a list of names of the richest people in Indonesia 2021 last April. From the list is the name Alexander Tedja.

He was ranked as the 15th richest person in Indonesia this year. Total wealth owned reaches US $ 1.4 billion.

If converted into rupiah, the total wealth reaches Rp. 20.14 trillion (Exchange rate of Rp. 14,388 per US dollar). Then who is he?

The man who was born in Medan, September 22, 1945, is one of Indonesia’s most famous businessmen. The road to success as an entrepreneur has been started since he was young.

At the age of 27, for example, he has started to wrestle in the film and cinema business. He did this by establishing PT ISAE FILM in 1972.

He developed this business five years later by establishing PT Menara Mitra Cinema Corp. Success in the film business, he entered the property business by establishing Pakuwon Jati in 1982.

After establishing the company, he cleverly bought a plot of land on Jalan Basuki Rahmat, Surabaya. Then he transformed the land into a large and magnificent shopping center called Plaza Tunjungan I.

Plaza Tunjungan I opened in 1986. The plaza continues to grow in its journey to become bigger. Success with Plaza Tunjungan I, Alexander Tedja’s business is growing.

Only 8 years later, he developed a residential area business in Surabaya, Pakuwon City. The project continued to grow until he built Plaza Tunjungan II and III, Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Tower, Regensi Condominium, Mandiri Tower, Plaza Tunjungan IV. This project later became the first superblock in Surabaya called the Tunjungan City Superblock.

Success in Surabaya does not necessarily make this Medan-born man quickly complacent. He then looked at Jakarta as a place for business development.

In 2007, he and his business group acquired an 83.3 percent stake in PT Artisan Wahyu. Artisan is a developer company for the Gandaria City Superblock

Ownership of shares of that size gives him many advantages. After acquiring Artisan’s shares, Pakuwon Jati continues to expand its business octopus.

With a strong business sense, he built the Kota Kasablanka shopping center project. These efforts made the achievement of Pakuwon Jati’s performance clearer.

In addition to acquiring shares and continuing to pursue his property projects, Alex established a new subsidiary called Pakuwon Permai. This is done in order to facilitate transactions.

Through this subsidiary, Alex is getting bigger. He succeeded in developing the Pakuwon Indah Superblock Superblock and the Royal Plaza shopping center in Surabaya.

Through his subsidiary, he has also succeeded in building Blok M Plaza and Somerset Berlian Service Apartments.

The brilliance of that performance made the company shine even more. Last year, for example, Pakuwon Jati’s market capitalization value reached Rp. 19.64 trillion. That makes Pakuwon the number one developer in Indonesia.

Understandably, the market capitalization value beats that of other property giants such as PT Bumi Serpong Damai Tbk, PT Metropolitan Kentjana Tbk, PT Ciputra Development Tbk, and PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk.

Clever and Genius
