WASHINGTON — Alexander Ovechkin scored into an empty net to beat Gordie Howe for the second all-time National League goal on Friday.
His 802nd goal came with a minute on the clock in the third period, to cap the Washington Capitals’ 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets.
“It feels good to do it at home in front of family, friends and fans,” Ovechkin said. It’s big.”
The 37-year-old Russian had leveled Howe in the first half.
The goal record belongs to Wayne Gretzky, with 894.
“One thing at a time,” said Ovechkin, along with his boyfriends Sergei and Ilya. There is still a long way to go.”
After his 802nd goal, the first pick in the 2004 draft received a video tribute from Gordie’s son Mark Howe.
“On behalf of Gordie Howe, who you just passed, and my mother Colleen and the entire Howe family, we just want to congratulate you on this amazing achievement,” said Mark Howe. It’s been a pleasure to see you progress.”
Gordie Howe died in 2016, aged 88.
Ovechkin had not scored in his previous four games, following a hat trick in Chicago.
He gave the team a 1-0 lead with his 21st goal this season, with 1:38 left in the first period.
Ovechkin converted a wrist shot from the right circle, after receiving a back pass from Dylan Strome.
David Rittich was beaten between the pads.
Ovechkin also took part in Sonny Milano’s goal.
In his 18th National League season, he had 1,450 points, 18th in history.
Nic Dowd also scored for the Capitals, who have won their last four games.
The club have only lost once in 10 games.
Kevin Stenlund filled in for the Jets.
Winning goalkeeper Charlie Lindgren made 25 saves, two more than Rittich.
The Caps will play again Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.
The Jets will host the Wild on the same day.
