The United States is imposing sanctions on six Bulgarian citizens for serious corruption in Bulgaria. Among those mentioned are former MRF MP Delyan Peevski, Vasil Bozhkov and former DATO deputy director Ilko Zhelyazkov.
bTV contacted one of the US-sanctioned – Alexander Manolev. He said he learned from the media about the corruption investigation against him and would comment after reviewing the documents.

Petar Haralampiev told bTV that he knew nothing and declined to comment.
The Ministry of Justice refrained from comment, as did the Ministry of Finance. They explained that they would comment after the official announcement of the US State Department.
The MRF declined to comment because it is not a political issue.

Earlier it became clear that the caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev had a telephone conversation with US Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Newland.
She informed him that according to the “Magnitsky” law, sanctions are underway against three Bulgarian citizens and 64 legal entities.
Another three people will be subject to a more limited sanctions regime. The measures are being implemented in the context of the efforts for effective fight against corruption in Bulgaria, the press service of the Council of Ministers informs.
International Lawyer Ivaylo Dermendzhiev. clarify the nature of the sanctions:
“Every American who does business with them – his assets will be blocked in the United States. Imagine that every transfer made in US currency goes through the United States. Any transfer similar through dollars will be blocked and stopped, as long as it is related to companies with these people. The sanction against individuals is not to enter the United States. The economic sanctions are mainly related to money transfers and to 64 companies on the list of the banned list “, explained the lawyer. Ivaylo Dermendzhiev.
“These US sanctions reflect the understanding of the new US administration that it must respond with a friendly gesture to the changes taking place in Bulgaria. According to bTV, the leader of GERB Boyko Borissov talked with the US Ambassador to Bulgaria Hero Mustafa, but it was not about the sanctions.
