President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko cannot be a mediator in peace talks on Ukraine. This was announced today, August 24, by the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Alexander Merezhko.
According to him, if Lukashenka really wanted peace, he would turn to Moscow with a demand to stop the NMD in Ukraine and immediately withdraw the troops. At the same time, he believes that the Belarusian leader cannot be a mediator in peace negotiations for at least two reasons.
“Firstly, in order to be a mediator in any international conflict, a state or a politician must enjoy the trust of the parties and be fairly neutral. In the case of Belarus, mediation is out of the question, since, from the point of view of international law, Belarus is a state complicit in aggression. Secondly, Mr. Lukashenko has dubious legitimacy. He is not a democratically elected president of Belarus, but, in fact, a usurper,” Merezhko added.
Recall that Alexander Lukashenko today congratulated the people of Ukraine on Independence Day. He stated that for the sake of the future, “we must create safe opportunities for a decent coexistence of the entire region,” and also wished the Ukrainians peace.
