It has been a long time since we had any news on the state of health of theformer CART pilot and multi-medalist Alex Zanardi. In an interview with BMW, his wife Daniela announced this Monday, December 20, 2021 that her husband champion was able to leave the hospital where he had been staying since over a year and a half.
“Recovery continues to be a long process”, she declares on the official website of BMW, a brand of which Alex Zanardi is a proud ambassador. “The rehabilitation program led by doctors, physiotherapists, neuropsychologists and speech therapists has allowed steady progress. Of course, the setbacks are there and can still occur. Sometimes you also have to take two steps back in order to take a step forward. But Alex proves again and again that he is a real fighter ”.
“An important milestone was that Alex was able to leave the hospital a few weeks ago and is now back home with us”, she rejoices. “We had to wait a very long time for this and we are very happy that it has been possible now, although temporary stays in special clinics are still planned in the future to carry out special rehabilitation measures on site. “
The Covid-19 pandemic obviously did not make things easier for the recovering pilot.“It must be taken into account that due to the situation linked to the Coronavirus, Alex was surrounded for a year and a half only by people wearing masks and protective equipment”, recount Daniela Zanardi. “In addition, due to the comprehensive and extensive protective measures in the clinic, visitation possibilities are, of course, very limited. “
“Alex has not met friends and part of the family for a year and a half”
“Alex hasn’t met friends and part of the family for a year and a half. Only me, our son and Alex’s mother could visit him, but always only one person a day and for only an hour and a half. All of this did not help make the situation any easier for him. The fact that he is now at home with us is therefore a help, even if, at home too, he can currently only be with the closest family.
“We are very grateful to the medical staff at the clinics where he was treated. Doctors, caregivers, therapists and everyone involved have done so much for Alex and continue to support us in his healing process. In the clinics, Alex is in very good hands, but his own house remains his own house. “
“Alex has more and more strength in his arms”
“The various programs that Alex followed at the hospital are now being continued at home. During the week, a therapist works with him and they do physical, neurological and speech therapy exercises. As far as his physical condition is concerned, there is a lot of progress. Alex has more and more strength in his arms, it has increased a lot. And, unlike the hospital where he was often bedridden, Alex now spends most of the day in a wheelchair with us. He just rests a little in the afternoon after lunch. “
“We still cannot predict how his recovery will progress. It is still a long and difficult road that Alex approaches with a lot of fighting spirit. It is a great help for him and for us to receive so much support on this path, not just from the doctors and therapists who work intensively with him. Our friends are always there for us. This includes the BMW Group family on whom we can always count and who stand firmly by our side even in these difficult times. “
“A big ‘Grazie’ to all those who send their kind thoughts”
“We are very grateful to all of you for this and much more, as these strong bonds give us extra energy. This also goes for the constant sympathy we receive from pilots, fans and acquaintances all over the world. We would like to express a big ‘Grazie’ to all who send their kind thoughts and power to Alex. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. “
