Alex Tanguay appointed assistant coach in Detroit

SPORTS. Alex Tanguay will now support coach Jeff Blashill with the Detroit Red Wings who was named assistant coach by Steve Yzerman on Wednesday.

The hockey player, a native of Sainte-Justine, has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Iowa Wild in the American Hockey League. Prior to becoming a coach, he occasionally worked as an analyst for the NHL Network.

Tanguay played 16 seasons in the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning and Arizona Coyotes. He has scored 283 goals and 580 assists in 1,088 regular season games, in addition to 19 goals and 40 assists in 98 career NHL playoff games.

He won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001, the team that had selected him in the first round, 12e in total, in the 1998 NHL Draft.
