The US women’s national team defeated Canada 1-0 in Monday night’s CONCACAF W Championship final in Monterrey, Mexico. Alex Morgan scored the team’s only goal with a perfectly converted penalty in the 78th minute Morgan sent a ball to Rose Lavelle on a tour of the box and Alisha Chapman’s story for a penalty was confirmed by VAR. Morgan did the rest, sending the keeper the other way with a low shot.
A USWNT win over Canada earns the champions a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics and a spot in the 2024 W Gold Cup. The win is also the ninth CONCACAF title for the United States and their third straight.
Head coach Vlatko Andonovsky continued to change players throughout the tournament and into the final of the tournament, although he only made two adjustments in the final of the semifinals against Costa Rica. Five players who started against Canada in last summer’s Olympic Games semifinals, which Canada won, also took part in the game.
This time, the United States were the most creative team in attack, getting 17 shots against Canada’s 11. The Americans were always sharper and were unlucky before the penalty. Canada had a few chances to equalize but Alyssa Naher was up for the task in goal, making the skilled saves it took to secure the goal and the trophy.
Early in the third place match, Jamaica defeated Costa Rica 1-0.
