Alex Kroes returns to Ajax. Not in the role of general manager, but as technical director. As long as the investigation by the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) is ongoing, this will be as titular director. The Amsterdam club reported this on Thursday afternoon via the official club channels.
On April 2, 2024, Kroes was suspended after the Supervisory Board learned that he had purchased more than 17,000 Ajax shares a week before the publication of his intended appointment on August 2, 2023. If at any time it is determined by a competent authority that there has been a serious violation of the rules regarding insider trading, the Supervisory Board will also reconsider Kroes’ position as titular technical director.
Supervisory Board chairman Michael van Praag says on the Ajax website: “We are not deaf to the sounds around us and have spoken frequently in recent weeks to people inside and outside Ajax, including the Board of Directors and of course Alex himself. Naturally, conditions were agreed upon that made this change possible. The club must move on and we believe that it is good for Ajax that we have ultimately arrived at this solution together. Alex will play an important role in the football technical part of the organization and will mainly focus on the purchasing and sales policy.”
Alex Kroes also responds: “I am very happy that we have found a suitable solution. That together we have put the interests of Ajax and football first. The focus at Ajax must return to football. We need everyone’s support to finish this season as best as possible.”
“At the same time, we will work together vigorously for the new season. It is high time to join forces as one Ajax and merge all the knowledge and skills that Ajax players have within and around the club. I look forward to building a bright future for Ajax not only with Louis van Gaal, Danny Blind, Marijn Beuker and Kelvin de Lang, but also with everyone around them. Ajax must become Ajax again.”
