Alex Kessidi’s journey to the bronze medal game began with an impressive victory on technical superiority against Matej Mandic of Croatia, who previously placed second at the 2023 U23 World Cup. After too tough a challenge in the quarter-finals against last year’s world champion, Ali Cengiz of Turkey, Alex feel defeated.
As Ali Cengiz then made it to the final, Alex was given another chance to re-enter the competition through a re-qualification where he faced Yoan Danielov Dimitrov of Bulgaria. After an intense and exciting battle, which ended with a points win with 4-1 on points, Alex managed to secure his place further in the competition with a well-deserved victory and is ready for the bronze medal match.
In the bronze medal match, Alex faces Kiryl Mskevich from Belarus, an experienced opponent with an impressive track record. We expect a tough and exciting match for the bronze medal, which will take place later tonight around 18:00, Swedish time. The match will be broadcast live on UWW+.
Other Swedish male participants at the European Championships:
Alex Bica impressed in the 63kg class by taking a solid first-round win against Armenia’s Hrachya Poghosyan, last year’s bronze medalist at the European Championships. After a tough match, Bica stood strong and secured the victory with the score 5-5. In the following round, in the quarter-finals, he faced Ukraine’s Oleksandr Hrushyn, an experienced wrestler with previous success at the European Championships. Despite an impressive effort, it was not enough for Bica to advance. In the re-qualification, he faced France’s Stefan Roger Clement, who took fifth place during last year’s world championships. Unfortunately, the opposition was too tough and Bica had to see themselves defeated after a point loss with 3-6.
In the 77-kilogram class, Albin Olofsson wrestled and started the competition with a solid win on points in the first match against Switzerland’s Fabio Dietsche. After a strong start, he encountered tough opposition in the form of Adilet Tiuliubaev, whose strength was too much for Olofsson. Tiuliubaev did not advance in the competition and Olofsson’s journey in the championship ended.
Today three more wrestlers entered the competition. Niklas Öhlen in the 67-kilogram class started against Slavik Galstyan from Armenia in the round of 16, where he lost 4-12 in points. Aleksandar Stjepanetic in the 97-kilogram class, started the tournament with a solid win against Filip Smetko from Serbia. He then encountered tough opposition, in the form of Abubakar Khaslakhanau of Belarus, whom he failed to overcome. Debutant Lukas Ahlgen, who competes in the 82-kilogram class, lost the first match against Belarus’ Stanislau Shafarenka and all three are hoping that their opponents go to the final so they can re-qualify.
