The jury in Texas believes that conspiracy theorist Alex Jones must pay additional compensation to survivors of the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, reports Reuters.
Jones must pay $45.2 million in punitive damages. This is an additional penalty if the court finds the defendant’s actions or behavior particularly harmful.
He was sentenced on Thursday to pay 4.1 million dollars in “compensatory damages”.
In total, Alex Jones must pay $49.3 million in damages to the parents of one of the children killed in the school shooting.
Claimed shooting was staged
20 students and six adults were killed in the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.
Alex Jones is a well-known conspiracy theorist and has claimed that the shooting never took place.
He has made claims on the website InfoWars that the school shooting was staged by actors.
The parents of the children who were killed have been harassed by Jones supporters for several years. They tell of threats, assaults and shots fired at houses and cars.
Therefore, the parents of one of the children who were killed have taken the case to court.
The boy’s parents initially demanded 150 million dollars in compensation and restitution.
Now believe that the shooting happened
When Jones explained himself in court on Wednesday, he said it was irresponsible of him to claim that the school massacre was a hoax.
He assured that he is now convinced that the massacre really happened.
During the trial, Jones is said to have said that he never sent text messages with allegations about the 2012 school shooting.
But probably his lawyer, knows an accident, will have sent all the text messages that Jones has sent in the last two years to the parents’ lawyers.
In this way, these claims were disproved, and the parents’ case strengthened.
