A monument that collapses. And the end of an era. The Manchester United has decided to terminate the club ambassador contract signed in 2013 by Alex Ferguson. The reason? Lower costs. The Scottish manager, now 82 years old, retired eleven years ago after winning 38 trophies in 26 years as Manchester United manager (1986-2013), an unrivaled record in England. Since then, he has been the club’s global ambassador with a contract valued, at the time of his signing in October 2013, at £2.16m a year, around €2.6m at current exchange rates. The matter was resolved amicably during a meeting at Old Trafford between the founder and chief executive of INEOS, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, owner of the Manchester club, and Ferguson, who will leave his post at the end of the current football season. Manchester United have undertaken a major internal reorganisation, with savings plans launched at all levels of the club, following the arrival as a minority shareholder of Jim Ratclifferesponsible for football operations, in February this year. In September, Manchester United announced net losses for the fifth consecutive year of £113.2 million (€133.7 million) for last season, despite record revenues.
Cantona: “He should have done what he wanted until he died”
Among the strongest reactions was that of the former French champion Eric Cantona5 seasons and 143 appearances with him Unitedwho posted a photo with Sir Alex and heavily attacked the club: “Sir Ferguson should have done everything he wants at the club until he dies. What a lack of respect! It’s totally scandalous. He will be my boss forever. And I would throw them all in a big bag of *****”
