The latest studies from I-CAD, the body responsible for identifying pets, demonstrate this increase in thefts. According to the data, reported by Le Figaro, 459 dogs and 157 cats were reported stolen in France during the year 2022. Just that!
That is an increase of 21% compared to the previous year. The numbers also show an incredible 101% increase in flights cats over the past 4 years.

The most affected regions

But why are thieves interested in our furry friends? Well the motivations behind these thefts are many. If most of the time, these are thefts of opportunity. Which means the animal was in the garden unattended or left in front of a supermarket.
In other cases, thieves will assault owners to steal their dog. Some criminals even go so far as to take hostage the animal and demand a ransom to return it.
