Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Australian authorities have confirmed an incident of community infection with the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the country. This makes the Kangaroo Country increase its vigilance.
Citing the Straits Times, the infected patient was reported to have been in the crowds of Sydney several times before being confirmed with the Omicron Varian Covid-19 infection.
“Fully vaccinated citizens are visiting busy shopping malls in Sydney while possibly infecting,” the country’s authorities said.
With the discovery of the first community infections, Australia brought the total number of infections of this new variant to six. The other cases are mostly found in quarantine centers on arrival abroad and also with very mild symptoms.
Meanwhile, reports of new community cases come as Australia’s cabinet meets to review measures aimed at limiting the spread of the variant that first broke out in South Africa.
So far, the country in the South of the Earth has also temporarily postponed the reopening of its international borders for the next two weeks. Even so, the federal government is urging state leaders to continue with plans to relax domestic border restrictions
“We need to make a calm decision. Don’t be afraid of this,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told a news conference in Canberra.
Omicron, dubbed the “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization, is potentially more infectious than the previous variant. Even so, there are signs that the variant may be lighter than feared.
Strict border restrictions and rapid lockdowns have helped Australia keep Covid-19 figures relatively low, with the country so far recording around 210,000 cases and 2,006 deaths.
