Alert: Potential Outbreak of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in Transition Season, Pediatrician Warns

Tugumalang.id – The potential for an outbreak of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) cases needs to be alerted by all elements of society. Because dengue fever attacks will generally increase when the transition season arrives.

Pediatrician specializing in Infections and Tropical Diseases at Persada Hospital Malang, Dr. Irene Ratridewi, explained that cases of dengue fever still exist throughout the year, both in the rainy and dry seasons.

“But during a transition like this, there will usually be an increase in dengue fever cases,” he said after attending the Meet the Expert event entitled ‘Beware of DHF in the Transition Season’ at Persada Hospital Malang on Saturday (16/12/2023).

According to him, deaths due to the dengue outbreak nationally reached hundreds of cases this year. However, it is said that in Malang City there have been no cases of death due to dengue fever in the last 6 months.

In general, said Irene, cases of death due to dengue fever are like an iceberg. Most commonly found in patients who are asymptomatic, followed by mild and severe symptoms. Cases of death in asymptomatic patients are suspected to be due to delays in medical treatment or treatment.

He said that the majority of people in Malang already know how to first respond when their family is infected with dengue fever. Moreover, data on dengue fever patients who were referred to referral hospitals recently shows that patients who seek treatment or come to the hospital, come at the right time.

“The dangers are patients who have never been treated and then go straight to referral hospitals. But his condition was serious, he had been cold at home for more than a day, he was starting to lose consciousness, he was bleeding a lot. It was serious,” he said.

Irene explained that people affected by DB symptoms are usually characterized by sudden high fever accompanied by dizziness, nausea and others.

“DB has a characteristic, sudden high fever. “So, for example, in the morning you are healthy but in the afternoon you come home, dizzy, muscle pain, nausea, those are usually the symptoms, along with a high fever,” he said.

It is said that first aid for people with DB symptoms is to drink as much water as possible to avoid dehydration. However, if nausea or vomiting persists, you must immediately go to hospital.

“Give as much fluid (water) as possible, but if you are still nauseous or vomiting, you must be treated in hospital,” he explained.

Even though the death rate is low, Irene said that people still need to be aware of dengue fever. Because for those who don’t understand, this disease is quite dangerous if not treated immediately. Especially for dengue fever patients whose fever has gone down but their body condition is actually weak.

“So if it gets worse, the complications will also be more dangerous. So treatment at the hospital will also take longer if you arrive at the hospital late. Recovery and stability are getting longer. “So it should take a maximum of 7-10 days to recover, it could take up to 2-3 weeks,” he explained.

Irene explained that the spread of dengue fever can occur when someone travels to a place prone to the spread of dengue fever. According to him, one of the locations prone to the spread of dengue fever is dense settlements around river watersheds (DAS).

“The transition is actually whether it rains continuously or it continues to be hot, it doesn’t matter. But if there is standing water left, it can give mosquitoes the opportunity to breed. Not just in puddles of dirty water, clean ones also have potential. “So the danger is the watershed area,” he said.

In the epidemiological triangle theory, Irene said that community diseases such as dengue fever are closely related to the environment, the host or human and the virus or cause of the disease.

“So we have to shake these 3 so they don’t get infected. “Environmental handling is carried out by 3M, fogging, installing nets or mosquito nets and others,” he said.

Then strengthens the host’s or human’s resistance. One of them is by vaccinating as a virus shield. However, Irene said, the formula to eradicate the disease or dengue virus is still being developed.
