Alert Issued by National Police on Extortion and Insecurity Crisis in Ecuador

This Friday, December 1, the National Police issued an alert to citizens in case they were a victim of extortion.

Faced with the insecurity crisis that is being experienced nationwide, the institution asked to report threats under the modality known as “vaccines.”

“Stop extortion! Your contribution is essential to report cases of extortion, through 1800 CRIME (335486),” says a publication on the X social network.

The same statement highlights that absolute confidentiality of the identity of the victims will be maintained.

However, it must be taken into account that the telephone number is not an official complaint line, because the only legal channel for this is the Prosecutor’s Office, through which an alert is issued so that the crime can be investigated.

In the case of 1800 CRIME it is a line of advice, to be able to appease the crime, guide the person who is being a victim and properly channel that information.

Article 185 of the Comprehensive Organic Penal Code (COIP) punishes the crime of extortion with a custodial sentence of three to five years.

Ecuador is going through its worst insecurity crisis in the face of an unprecedented wave of violence at the hands of drug trafficking mafias and organized crime, which have almost quintupled the homicide rate in the last five years, in a trend that could place Ecuador as one of the most violent countries in Latin America at the end of 2023, according to experts.

To face the problem, the President of the Republic, Daniel Noboa, appointed the Military High Command on November 30, 2023. “I commit to fighting alongside him every day to return peace and glory to the Ecuadorian people,” said the president.

For his part, the new head of the Joint Command of the FF. AA., Rear Admiral Jaime Vela Erazo, pointed out that to achieve peace, war must be fought, with the support of the entire country.
