Alert in Patras – Student hospitalized in ICU with meningitis (Video) – 2024-02-23 04:38:36

A 20-year-old student, who was diagnosed with meningitis, is being treated in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital of Patras.

The 20-year-old felt unwell during yesterday’s meeting of the Mathematics department and immediately afterwards she lost consciousness, according to the APE-MPE.

The student was taken to the University Hospital, where, after the tests she underwent, the doctors decided to proceed with intubation due to the seriousness of her health condition.

Disinfection is to be carried out in the premises where the Mathematics and Biology departments of the University of Patras are co-located.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brainstem and spinal cord, called meninges. It is caused by various factors, usually bacteria and viruses.

Viral meningitis is very common but rarely fatal. It presents mild symptoms and is not treated with antimicrobial treatment. On the contrary, bacterial meningitis is rarer than viral meningitis, but also more dangerous and even fatal in some of its forms.

Basically cause of bacterial meningitis are meningococcus, pneumococcus, hemophilus type b, streptococcus, mycobacterium tuberculosis and others. THE transmission of the disease varies depending on the cause.

The symptoms of meningitis vary according to the incident, while they do not always appear in their entirety.

THE bacterial meningitis often presents with a sudden onset of fever, headache and stiff neck. At the same time, it can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, confusion.

Symptoms of bacterial meningitis may appear within hours or even days of exposure (usually after 3-7 days).

THE viral meningitis shows milder symptoms. In infants it causes fever, irritability, anorexia, lethargy. Adults also experience high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, photophobia. Symptoms in viral meningitis usually last 7-10 days.
