According to the WHO, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is caused by a virus (Nairovirus) of the Bunyaviridae family, transmitted by ticks. It causes outbreaks of severe viral haemorrhagic fever, with a case fatality rate of 10 to 40%. CCHF is endemic in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and Asia, in countries below 50 degrees north latitude, the geographical limit of the main vector species, a tick.

Although an inactivated vaccine has been developed against CCHF and used on a small scale in Eastern Europe, there is currently no safe, effective and widely available vaccine for humans. In the absence of a vaccine, raising public awareness of the risk factors and knowledge of the measures to be taken to reduce exposure to the virus remain the only means of reducing the risk of infection in humans.
