There is an epidemiological alert in Colombia due to a strong growth in dengue cases in various regions of the country. There are already 226 municipalities that have an outbreak of this disease and more than 170 are on alert; Well, according to the latest report from the National Institute of Health, INS, more than 2,400 positive cases are reported.
According to information from the Government, there is currently a dengue vaccine authorized by Invima but it is not marketed. The reason is that the biological serves as a prevention but does not work therapeutically. In addition, it only works for the secondary type of dengue when there are four variants.
Invima announced that they are studying a new application: it is the vaccine presented by the Japanese laboratory Takeda, which has already been authorized in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Argentina and Indonesia. It is indicated for people over four years of age and promises to prevent various types of dengue.
The vaccine presented by Takeda, which is here in Colombia represented by a company called Baxalta, is already in the final phases of pharmacological evaluation by the Review Commission in the Specialized Medicines Room. Obviously, with the background that exists, this evaluation has to be very careful for it to really be a valid therapeutic tool, but in a very short time we will already have the pharmacological evaluation of the vaccine,” said Luis Guillermo Restrepo Vélez, director Technician of Medicines and Biological Products of Invima.
It is expected that, in a month, the entity will already have the result of the evaluation made by the Review Commission so that it can continue its process and know if its use is approved or not.
In addition, the concern of the national government is that there are already 29 people dead because of this disease, all minors, in addition to the fact that one in three patients are under 17 years of age. Faced with this situation, the Minister of Health, Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo, announced that they are studying the possibility of implementing rapid dengue tests to expedite detection.
