Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The bus-sized asteroid will fly past Earth on January 6, 2022. However, this is not expected to pose a significant threat.
The asteroid, named 2014 YE15, measures 12.8 meters or 42 feet, and will traverse 4.6 million miles from the Earth or about 19 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
NASA views, if an asteroid comes within 4.6 million miles and is larger than about 150 meters, then it can be considered a threat that should be watched out for.
Asteroid 2014 YE15 is considered a harmless object, due to its relatively small size and considerable distance from Earth.
However, if the asteroid hits the earth, there will be significant damage.
In 1908, for example, an asteroid about 36.5 meters or 120 feet wide entered the atmosphere over Siberia, traveled at 33,500 miles per hour and exploded in the sky.
The asteroid released the energy equivalent of about 185 Hiroshima bombs and could flatten an entire forest.
NASA itself continues to observe every asteroid that is approaching Earth through a program called the Near Earth Project. Asteroid 2014 YE15 was first identified at the Mount Lemmon Observatory.
