Alena Mills: Czech Women’s Hockey Icon Retires After Premier Olympic Games Participation

During the premier participation of Czech women’s ice hockey players at the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, she was given the opportunity to carry the flag at the opening ceremony. She has represented in the adult category since she was fourteen years old, wearing the captain’s badge on her chest since 2010.

After the last world championship and the defense of the bronze medal, she decided to end her representative career at the age of 33. The icon of women’s hockey in the Czech Republic collected a total of 117 points in 156 matches for the national team.

This season, she has not yet played in any team and was waiting for an offer. Finally, in the season played, she agreed to a one-year cooperation with the Agidel Ufa team, where she worked for two seasons between 2018 and 2020. In the Russian WHL, she previously wore the jersey of St. Petersburg and then the Chinese team Vanke Rays from Shenzhen.

Last year she played in Sweden’s Brynäs, now she is returning to Russia despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. “Every year the competition is getting better and better. I am amazed that so much attention is paid to women’s hockey in Russia,” quoted Alena Mills, who took the surname after her American husband from Alaska, who lives in Russia, according to the WHL official website.

She dominated the league twice and participated in the All-Star Games three times. Ufa is currently leading the table. The Czech defender Pavlína Horálková, who has been defending the colors of Krasnoyarsk for the tenth year, is also active in the competition.
