Aleksander Ceferin wants to continue as president of UEFA for longer. To this end, he will propose a plan to amend the statutes at the conference of the European Football Association on February 8, UEFA has confirmed.
These articles of association state that a chairman may remain in office for a maximum of three terms of four years. Ceferin introduced that rule himself after he was elected in 2016 as successor to Michel Platini, who had to leave due to involvement in an extensive corruption case.
Ceferin won the election at the time over Michael van Praag. In 2019 and earlier this year, Ceferin was re-elected by acclamation, where no votes are taken due to the lack of an opposing candidate, but applause is sufficient. The KNVB supported Ceferin’s re-election, partly in the hope of support for the 2027 World Cup bid.
‘Undemocratic’
The 56-year-old Ceferin is now starting his campaign to be re-elected for a third time in 2027. According to the BBC, the Slovenian’s plans were criticized by committee members during the most recent UEFA board meeting. Ceferin’s proposal would have been labeled as undemocratic.
At the congress in Paris on February 8, Ceferin needs a two-thirds majority of the total of 55 members to amend the statutes in his favor.
