On January 17, the 1/32 final match of the Australian Open 2024 took place between Aleksandar Kovacevic (USA, ATP 101) and Karen Khachanov (ATP 15).
The “neutral” tennis player defeated his opponent in four sets with a score of 6:4, 6:3, 4:6, 6:3.
At the start of the second set, a funny episode happened. Khachanov hung on a break point on his serve in the third game. After the serve, Kovacevich failed to receive it successfully, but still returned the ball to Karen’s side. Most likely, the ball was flying into touch, but he did not touch the court because the ballboy decided to grab it before it fell.
The referee ordered a replay of the point. Khachanov immediately went to investigate and insisted that it would have been an out. However, the arbitrator was confident in her decision. As a result, Kovacevich showed sportsmanship and independently gave the point to Khachanov.
In the 1/16 finals of the Australian Open, Khachanov will play against Tomas Machac.
Kovacevic started the Australian Major with qualifying. In the 2nd round of selection, he beat the first racket of Ukraine Vitaly Sachko.
