2024 Spring and summer series with Alek Wek Interview Q&A
Q: What has your creativity taught you?
Alek Wek: My experience tells me that inspiration is endless, but perfection is out of reach. Just like personal style, creation comes from within, so I will continue to keep creating.
Q: When are you most passionate about creating?
Alek Wek: I often get inspiration during the process of artistic creation. I love this feeling and I can feel myself growing from it.
Q: What kind of work do you dream of creating?
Alek Wek: I dream of creating a better world. I hope that when I leave, the world will be a much better place than it is now; I hope that I can make some contribution to that.
Q: How does fashion empower you?
Alek Wek: Working in the fashion industry provides me with a platform for communication. As a refugee who lived through the civil war in Sudan and came to the UK to seek refuge and education, it’s incredible that I can share my experience to raise awareness of important issues.
Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Alek Wek: “Never stop being yourself.” My uncle told me, “keep being yourself”. Especially at such a critical time in my life, it felt so reassuring and wonderful to hear these words from someone I loved and respected.
Q: Please share a difficulty you have overcome recently.
Alek Wek: I recently injured my foot. I thought I would never walk in heels again, and I had been wearing heels for decades. Although I was scared, with the encouragement of my friends and family, I stood on the catwalk again! It’s great that I can still continue to enjoy these creative endeavors without having to worry about the shoes I wear while doing the things I love.
Q: What do you think can only be learned through hardship?
Alek Wek: Keep being myself. I had to learn the hard way and try not to worry and be anxious after making a decision. It sounds so simple yet so challenging.
Q: In the coming spring, how do you most want to dress yourself?
Alek Wek: I’m looking forward to wearing floral prints and colorful pieces, which inspire my creativity.
Q: Is there anything you’ve always wanted to try?
Alek Wek: I’ve always wanted to try surfing! I am learning to swim, and surfing in the ocean is a very liberating thing, which is great just thinking about it.
Q: What’s the last thing people would guess about you?
Alek Wek: The last thing people would guess is that I’m actually quite reserved, reserved and shy. I have different styles and I like that.
