Aldi and Carrefour also put restrictions on quantities that customers can purchase

After Colruyt and Lidl last week, Aldi and possibly also some Carrefour stores are now putting restrictions on the quantities that customers can purchase certain products. The supermarkets see a sales peak for some products.

Last week Colruyt, the largest supermarket chain in the country, was the first to announce that it would set limits on the sale of certain products. Customers were asked to bring a maximum of two pieces of oil or flour. There are no shortages, it sounded, but consumption was “no longer normal”. Lidl announced restrictions on oil, canned vegetables and toilet paper.

Now other supermarkets are also following. Aldi is introducing a rule for all its stores: customers are allowed to purchase a maximum of three pieces of oils, wheat flour and baking mixes per ticket. The discounter will inform customers through posters in the stores. “Our supplier is currently able to handle production, but the sudden heavy peak in sales of these products means the logistics chain cannot keep up with the speed,” it sounds.

Carrefour looks at it store by store. “The situation has evolved,” said a spokeswoman. “Through messages they’ve picked up, some consumers have changed their behavior and we’ve seen rising demand for certain products.” Each store director decides for himself which products may be subject to restrictions.

The war in Ukraine has raised fears of supply problems. Ukraine and Russia are among the largest producers of wheat and sunflower oil worldwide.
