Learning from mistakes doesn’t work
Due to impaired executive functions, people with FASD find it difficult to transfer experiences from one situation to another. Learning from mistakes or even success just doesn’t work for them. To put it quickly: After they set fire to the bedroom, they might take the next opportunity to test what would happen if they set fire to the curtains in the living room.
People with FASD also have great difficulty planning. Do laundry, fill the fridge, pay bills “Most people are capable of such tasks, but they don’t realize it’s their turn now,” says Landgraf. People with FASD need a pacemaker. which tells them: “It’s time again.”
Marina explains it this way: “I can be a train very well, but I need a locomotive.” Such “locomotives” can be carers, social workers, parents or foster parents or, in some cases, a partner. According to a study in Berlin, about 30 percent of those affected could live independently, says FASD expert Landgraf.
